Which sculptures contained the Walk of Ideas?

Six sculptures presented on the “Walk of Ideas” an overview of the spectrum of important German inventions. The sculptures started with the innovative football boot, followed by milestones of medicine and the automobile. Modern book printing and masterpieces of music were then be depicted and things were rounded off by a presentation of the Theory of Relativity.

When and where were the “Walk of Ideas” on show?

Starting in mid-March the “Walk of Ideas” sculpture park was set up in a roughly fourteen-day rhythm. All six exhibits were in place by the end of May. The modern football boot was on show from 10 March 2006 in the Spreebogenpark close to Berlin’s main station. The sculpture “Milstones od Medicine” could be seen at the Friedrich-Ebert-Platz, the “Masterpieces in Music” were located at the Gendarmenmarkt. “The Theory of Relativity” memorized the achievements in sciences and mathematics in the Lustgarten.
“The “Modern Book Printing”, a twelve meter high pile of books represents the invention of Gutenberg.
One sculpture “The Automobile” was already removed to Munich airport and will now be on display on various international locations.

What did a sculpture cost?

The realisation of the works of art cost between 300,000 and 350,000 euros per sculpture.

What do the sculptures consist of?

The sculptures consist essentially of a new plastics mix, Neopor®. In the same way as on a surfboard the sculpture body was laminated with fibreglass and then coated with a plastic paste. After fine-shaping the sculpture concerned was given a new type of triple-coat metallic paintwork finish developed by BASF Coatings in Münster.

How were the sculptures made?

The idea for the “Walk of Ideas” was developed by an agency which also conducted the planning and made the sketches. On the basis of the construction drawing the sculptures were completed in an industrial process.

Who was involved in the manufacture?

BASF AG in Ludwigshafen, also an official partner of the initiative “Germany – Land of Ideas”, developed the plastic Neopor®. EDAG Engineering + Design in Fulda produced the sculptures for FC Deutschland GmbH.

What was special about the “Walk of Ideas”?

The “Walk of Ideas” illustrated German inventions which go back decades and even centuries but which are still relevant today. The “Walk of Ideas” therefore built a bridge between the past, the present and the future; in the respect that creative minds as well as modern and innovative companies were presenting the pioneering ideas of the past, together with the potential of the present generation of inventors and research scientists.
