Interview: Claudia Schiffer’s commitment to Germany

Question:
Frau Schiffer, you are known all round the world as an ambassador in matters of beauty. Now we can see you in a new role as an ambassador for German industry on billboards in London, New York and Tokyo. Why are you getting involved in such a comparatively dry subject as German industry?

Answer:
In reality I’ve felt a bit like an ambassador for Germany ever since the beginning of my international career, and in this project I liked both the aims and the execution. I think it’s good to promote Germany abroad in a laid-back way. When you look at the campaign it’s neither dry nor deadly solemn, as you might expect given the subject matter, and indeed as preconceived ideas of Germany would often have it.

Question:
After travelling the world as a top model you now live with your family in London. Do you nowadays feel more like a citizen of the world or do you still identify with Germany?

Answer:
It’s true that I’m now living very happily with my family in London, but I’ve never lost touch with Germany. My parents live in Germany and my children are growing up bilingual. It is very important to me that they know where their roots are. My lifestyle has forced me to be a citizen of the world but I can still identify with Germany as my homeland. For me there’s no contradiction between the two. Rather, I view it as an opportunity for me and of course also for my children.

Question:
What do you like most about Germany?

Answer:
Because I’ve got to know other countries and customs I now appreciate much more many of the things that are simply a part of Germany. For example I like the way my countrymen devote themselves with discipline and passion to something they regard as worthwhile. I myself am convinced that both qualities are extremely important if you want to be successful in my line of work. And it is because of this attitude that Germany will be a very good host for the 2006 World Cup.

Question:
On the subject of football, will you be following the World Cup with your family? And would you describe yourself as a football fan?

Answer:
People all over the world love football, that’s why I’m looking forward to the World Cup. At home we’ll try to watch as many matches as possible, especially of course the ones involving the German and English teams. A final between Germany and England would be perfect.
