Creativity is the future: the HPI School of Design Thinking receives an award

Potsdam/Berlin, 11/7/2008 - The ‘School of Design Thinking’ at the Hasso-Plattner-Institute in Potsdam (HPI), is Europe’s first School of Innovation for university students.
It has now received an award from the initiative ‘Germany – Land of Ideas’ and Deutsche Bank for creativity and future sustainability, so becoming a ‘Landmark in the Land of Ideas.’

This award makes the HPI School of Design Thinking one of the prize winners in the national competition for innovation called the ‘365 Landmarks in the Land of Ideas’.

Forty creative lateral thinkers, trained since October 2007 in the Design Thinking method of team-oriented, inventive development, presented their innovative projects to around 200 guests in a gala event at the Griebnitzsee campus in Potsdam-Babelsberg, together with HPI founder, Prof. Hasso Plattner, and patrons Prof. Günter Stock from the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and the Lord Mayor of Potsdam, Jann Jakobs.

Prof. Hasso Plattner explained the goals of the new course, “The aim of both of our D-Schools, at Stanford University and here at the HPI, is to enable the next generation of young, well-trained engineers to develop creative, innovative and user-friendly solutions.”

Pierre de Weck, Member of the Group Executive Committee of Deutsche Bank, stated in his speech that, “Good ideas can change the world. By being creative together, one can often achieve more than through long hours of solitary thought. This is precisely what the Hasso-Plattner-Institute in Potsdam encourages students to do. Students and professors can work together in groups here, in a creative and interdisciplinary way. It is only where thoughts are truly free that the good ideas of tomorrow are born.”

Prof. Christoph Meinel, Director of the Hasso-Plattner-Institute, accepted the award with thanks, saying, “We believe that the Design Thinking method stimulates creativity and enables well-trained specialists to innovate. The Hasso-Plattner-Institute has created the framework for this to take place through the academic conditions at the School of Design Thinking, which is unique in Europe. We are therefore very proud to have become a ‘Landmark’ in the Land of Ideas.”
