Walk of Ideas
March - September 2006

Germany's greatest assets are the ideas of the people who live here. We would like to present these ideas to our visitors from all over the world in a walk down the road of German inventiveness.

The “Walk of Ideas” invited visitors through Berlin past six giant sculptures representing the inventiveness and wealth of ideas in Germany. During the summer months the sculptures commenmorated the first time the “Innovative Football Boots” were used, “Milestones of Medicine”, “The Automobile”, “Modern Book Printing”, “Masterpieces of Music” and “The Theory of Relativity”. In case you missed the “Walk of Ideas” in Berlin, you can experience it now on a virtual sightseeing tour.

The sculptures were exhibited at prominent locations in Berlin’s city centre and have been unveiled between March and May 2006. First to be unveiled was the modern football shoe, developed by the Dassler family, which is credited with revolutionising the sport of football.

More German ideas are concealed within the sculptures themselves: they have all been made using the innovative plastic material Neopor® and coated with a special new paint developed by BASF Coatings. BASF AG - one of the Landmark Project’s official partners - is the company behind the new material, which is a revolutionary further development of Styropor®. Each of the works of art is up to 12 metres in height and weighs up to 20 tonnes. Each sculpture takes up to two months to create and positioning the sculptures in their final locations in Berlin can take more than 36 hours.

Virtual sightseeing flight

Each of the six sculptures of the "Walk of Ideas" can closely be looked at in a virtual sightseeing flight. The Hasso-Plattner-Institute in Potsdam developed the specific software technology and produced the video clips that showcase the sculptures embedded in a three-dimensional model of the city of Berlin. Thus the spectator can take an overall look at the whole "Walk of Ideas" and further places of interest in the city.
